Christmas Decorating on a Budget

I was so excited to start decorating for Christmas this year in part because for the first time ever we have a fireplace and a staircase to decorate! Unfortunately, our decorations from our last home don’t really “fit” in our new home. And with all our other renovations still ongoing there is essentially zero budget for buying a bunch of new decor. Our challenge was to try to make our house feel as festive as possible by reusing our old decorations and by buying a minimal amount of new ones. I’m not 100% satisfied with the results, but I’m considering this a transitional year for Christmas decorating. My main focus for this holiday was decorating the fireplace mantle. You may remember that we rushed to get the fireplace makeover done in time for decorations. This is definitely the most festive room on the house right now. The only thing I’m not pleased with is the garland. It’s a little blah for me, so I am thinking of getting some picks to decorate it with. christmas mantle on a budget

Our reclaimed moose head got a makeover with a sparkly pom pom on his nose now making him a festive Rudolph the red nose reindeer for the remainder of the holiday season.

I found this free Christmas printable from The 36th Avenue which I absolutely adore. I love how it ties the mint colors of our family room into the traditional red and green Christmas colors. This was a super easy and free way make a festive statement.

Merry and bright printable Our old tree fell apart during the move but we were lucky enough to score this new larger one for 50% at Target on Black Friday weekend. We used all our old ornaments except I added a set of shiny blue and teal ornaments (that I scored at Home Depot for $5)  into the mix to help the tree not feel so out of place in the room. I love my tree dripping in ornaments. Most of the branches have at least two ornaments hanging from them. Sophisticated christmas tree We placed green wreaths with red bows in all the windows along the back of the house. We used to hang these light-up wreaths outside, but most of the lights no longer work and now we have too many windows. I bought the bows from A.C. Moore on Black Friday for $1 a piece!  I love the pop of color it adds to our white kitchen. You can also spot Sparkle the Elf hanging out among our dishes. green wreath with red bow I also hung 2 pictures that the kids made with my sister-in-law last year in the kitchen. This is a great finger painting project for small children and doubles as free Christmas decor. The kids were really proud that I hung these up too. kids Christmas project This pice of DIY Christmas art is hanging in the foyer in what had been a blank spot. I had actually intended the letters (which I cut out of gold glitter scrapbook paper) to be banner, but when I opened our Christmas boxes I realized I had already bought a Christmas banner last year. I always forget what we already own. Since I had already gone through the trouble of cutting the letters out I decided to modge podge them to a frame that I had covered in wrapping paper. It’s actually our wedding picture that we haven’t hung up yet. I’m not sure I love this project but it was free and adds a lot of color to the foyer so I won’t complain. cheap christmas art Also in the foyer, we wrapped the bannisters in garland. Like the garland on the mantle I feel like this stuff is a little lackluster. Some Christmas picks would probably be helpful here too. I did however add some small ornament frames that have Christmas pictures of the kids from each year. decorating stiars for christmas I bought the ornaments for $3 a piece from Micheal’s and I plan to add a new one each year. This is my favorite project we did this year. I love be greeted by my kid’s smiling faces every time I walk through the door. hang pictures in garland

I’m already planning my post-Christmas shopping spree to stock up on some more decor for next year at 50% off! So how is everyone’s Christmas decorating going? Anyone else working on some DIY  holiday decor?
